*Tighter policing and stringent laws notwithstanding, crime against children in the country has seen a sharp increase in recent years. *
Figures from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) showed a 30 per cent increase in the rape of children between 2010 and 2011, while there was also a 24 per cent increase in all crimes against children from 2010, which was recorded as more than 33,000 cases in 2011.
Citing the figures, a UN agency on Saturday asked the government to make sure safety of girls and women in India on the streets, in schools, at work and at home.
"Recently published data show that more than 30,000 crimes were committed against children in India in 2011. The same source of data shows us that one in three of the rape victims is a child. More than 7,200 children, including infants are reported raped every year," United Nations Children's Fund, Unicef, said expressing its sympathy for the five-year-old rape victim who is undergoing treatment at AIIMS.
The NCRB data, which represents actual reporting of cases in states, clearly demonstrates raping of children and kidnapping (43 per cent increase) are on a steep rise between 2010 and 2011, while the corresponding figures show marginal increase between 2009 and 2010.
While there were 5484 rape cases against children registered in India in 2010, the number shot up to 7112 in 2011 - a 30 per cent jump. Similarly, the number of kidnapping and abduction cases increased from 10670 in 2010 to 15284 in 2011. The third highest increase was seen in the procuration of minor girls; the number jumped from 237 in 2009 to 679 in 2010 and 862 in 2011. Reported by Deccan Herald 21 hours ago.
