*UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday urged girls from scheduled castes and scheduled tribes to opt for a nursing career, as it "is one of the most noble professions."
*Gandhi who was at Palghar taluka, a tribal region over 100 km north of Mumbai, to launch the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), informed the gathering that nearly 270 nursing schools have been approved in far-flung and remote areas and this will provide ample opportunity to girls in becoming self-sufficient as well also serve 'society at large.'
Talking about the RBSK, she said the government main focus " is on the health and welfare of women and children, specially in backward regions of the country."
Elaborating on the scheme further she said: " The RBSK is a significant step towards controlling malnutrition amongst children in the country.Nearly 40 per cent of children in the country continue to be victims of malnutrition which is a matter of grave concern. I am confident that RBSK will prove to be successful in controlling the problem." The UPA chief also pointed out that mid-day meal schemes in government-run schools have managed to cut down malnutrition substantially.
"And let me assure you that there would be no shortage of funds for taking up for the development of the backward regions of the country and listed several schemes taken up for the benefit of the undeveloped parts in India," she said.Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, present at the launch along with Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad, said that the Unicef survey had shown that Maharashtra government's Rajmata Jijau Kuposhan Mukti Gram Abhiyan, " has actually reduced the incidence of malnutrition in the tribal blocks of Jawahar-Mokhada and Melghat regions."
