
The pediatric cancer incidence in Mumbai, according to population based cancer registry, ICMR Study, per million – 0- 14 years, is Boys - M– 89 per 1000000/ New cases per year and Girls - Mumbai – 59.2 per 1000000/ New cases per year.
Dr. Swetha Bansal, Consultant, Pediatric Oncologist, BNH HCG Cancer Centre, said, “The causes of cancer in children are unknown. There are many theories regarding what possibly causes cancer and research is ongoing in this field. Cancer is not infectious and it does not spread from one person to another. Children tolerate treatment better than adults in general and their cure rates are also much better. Approximately 7 out of 10 children can be cured from cancer, if diagnosed early and Leukemia is the commonest cancer in children followed by lymphomas & brain tumor.”
